One thing I had wholly forgotten about Southern California is the sheer number of radio stations that are accessible. I have been living in North Dakota so long that I had become accustomed to listening to a small handful of stations and had completely forgotten how many choices I used to have when I lived in a major metropolis where almost every inch of the FM dial was utilized. The amount of choice in So Cal remains glorious!
So today I share with you one my favorite finds from my recent Cali trip – a radio station called "Jill "- located on the So Cal FM dial at 92.7. I listened to it everyday as I got ready on my nephew Paul’s clock radio and it seemed like every other song I said, "I have not heard that song for ages!" Jill plays a nice mix of current and older music and it is all middle of the road rock, soft rock and pop (and they even throw some country in here and there). On about the third day of listening I caught that Jill actually streams online as well and I must say that I was more than a little thrilled (which may say too much about how easy I am to "thrill").
Now, no need to write me and welcome me to the twenty-first century…I realize there are other radio programs that stream live online. The point is not that I discovered a new medium, it is that I could take home one small piece of Cali that I never knew I missed until I was reintroduced to it.
I would be remiss if I did not note that I also love the name of the station – Jill – which is a pseudonym that I have been known to use in my summer dating dialogues with friends (i.e., Jack and Jill went up the hill…water, tumbling, broken crowns and such…in its seeming simplicity it serves as a fabulous metaphor for dating). I have to wonder some days if the universe doesn’t speak directly to me in a language that it knows I will understand. Consider it…a radio station named Jill that soon after I turned it on played Don Henley’s Boys of Summer…eerily clear to me that the universe is well-apprised of both my deeds and misdeeds.
If you want to hear what I am talking about check out Jill at www.927jillfm.com and please do let me know if you like it as much as I do…if so, consider it the Cali souvenir I brought back especially for you (and me).
