It ends today…

I was going to provide you a pictorial update of my San Antonio shenanigans today, but instead I want to take this opportunity to urge you to watch a short YouTube video created by Bruce Kelly on his push for an anti-bullying law in North Dakota.  In this video Bruce talks about Cassidy Joy Andel from Cooperstown, ND who hung herself on Thursday.  Bullying is the suspected cause of Cassidy’s suicide (see the article on In-Forum).

My heart and prayers go out to Cassidy’s friends and family.  This is such a horrible outcome and is the type of outcome we hear about increasingly as a result of bullying – particularly cyber-bullying.  I am deeply saddened to hear about the suicides of so many young people who felt like they had no other option to escape the torture of relentless bullying…we must do more to help these young people before it ends like this.

I urge you to stand behind the Bully Buster movement (see the page on Facebook) and I hope you will tell your legislators that North Dakota desperately needs an anti-bullying law.  As someone who experienced bullying in her life I can tell you that it is crippling to the soul and stays with you the entirety of your days (even if you are able to move on).  We must let young people know that bullying will not be tolerated…it must end…today.

Well said. I don’t think anyone over the age of 30 can possibly imagine what kids are faced with in regard to cyber-bullying. It no longer ends when you get off the bus at home–it continues 24-7 for the entire world to see.
Here’s a start: an anti-bullying law with some teeth, and everyone to lock arms and agree to never look the other way when we witness this behavior. This is an example of when minding our own business can have very serious consequences.

Well said. Let’s hope that North Dakota will not remain one of only four states that do not have a anti-bullying law. It’s going to be a difficult piece of legislation to draft, but once it’s done, it will help.
