Chutzpah! There is no other way to characterize what a woman in Superior, Wisconsin did today. She brought traffic on her street to a grinding halt as folks stopped to take photos “of a pile of boxes and items in a yard with signs that read ‘X-HUSBAND SALE’ and ‘FREE'” and to see the “once-green GMC Yukon SUV with flat tires and obscenities spray-painted on it” in her driveway.

Oh my. I’ll say at the outset that I know what this woman did was wrong and she likely broke some laws, but even knowing that I can’t help but giggle just a bit. It’s the chutzpah that she evidenced…even the cop at the door looks like he doesn’t feel very good about going up against her outrage and conviction. And if you are sitting there giggling a bit yourself I would guess it is because this is the type of response that so many of us would like to give in a situation where we feel horribly wronged by someone we trusted. But most of us either don’t have the chutzpah or our chutzpah is balanced out by our sensibility – so we just wouldn’t do this. Oh, but how we will giggle when we see someone else do it…and how we wish we had possessed the right amount of chutzpah to do the same thing when we had been wronged similarly.
Or maybe, I am the only one giggling. Maybe I am the only one who can identify with the way this woman handled her angst. Maybe I am the only one who can appreciate that sometimes big wounds take big band-aids. Maybe I am the only one that thinks that there is some equity and reclamation in this defiant act that deserves a nod of respect. Maybe I am the only one giggling.
Maybe…but somehow I doubt it.
