In the land of Mickey and Minnie…

The International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) hosts it’s conference every three years in Orlando, Florida. The locations for the years in-between vary, but all roads lead back to Florida. This is my third time attending the IAEM Conference in Florida.

The weather is typically nice in Florida and there are many great attractions and lots of shopping, but as far as conference locations go it really would not matter to me if we were in Kalamazoo. Well, if the weather in Kalamazoo was pleasant. I go to this conference for the people, not the location.

In fact, truth-be-told, Orlando is probably one of my least favorite locations. I imagine if I brought my family or took the time to visit various attractions I would be more excited about the place.  When you visit an area steeped in tourism and are not there to be a tourist it just isn’t the same.

But I am not here to complain,  as I said – I am here for the people.   These are the people that I typically only get to see once a year…people who are fighting the good fight to keep communities and organizations safe.  So let the week begin – the annual IAEM Conference with a hundred reconnects interspersed with lots of shop talk and plenty of laughs.  That is what I will be doing this week in the land of Mickey and Minnie – living large with my emergency management colleagues.

I teach at NDSU...but I remain a student of life with all the enthusiasm that entails. My favorite saying is, "Sometimes you have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down." In the new forty that is what I am doing...building my wings.
