The risk is rising…

Well here it is today…the news I feared was coming…news that could potentially disrupt a tranquil spring…news of an increased risk of major spring flooding.  Well…yippee-ki-yay.

The National Weather Service’s latest flood outlook puts the risk of major spring flooding up to 79%.  You may recall the risk of major flooding was only at 6% last month.  What a difference a month.

Major flood stage in this area is 30 feet. Our area has historically been able to rise to the occasion of major flood stage at the 30 foot level without too much fuss and muss.  As long as the river crests at that general level we should have a fairly peaceful spring. Unfortunately, there is no telling what additional precipitation we are facing over the next month or what the speed of warming in the area will be.  Ideally, we will get no additional substantial moisture and it will be a slow melt.

The next NWS outlook will be in two weeks.  Cross your fingers and stay tuned folks.  Our spring serenity hangs in the balance.
