ABC has a new show called The Lookout that does investigative consumer reporting. I enjoy the show because it ferrets out disreputable business folks and calls them on their dishonesty. I have now watched two episodes of the show. Watching these consumer rip-off exposés get me all wound-up. The brazen dishonesty displayed by some of these folks is very hard to swallow.
The most recent episode featured a topic near and dear to my heart – mechanic repair rip-offs visited upon women. I have to tell you I was seething at the baloney these shop mechanics tried to sell to the women in the sting. The Lookout team enlisted a fierce female mechanic – Audra Fordin – as part of their sting team. Audra is behind an effort to educate and empower women about their cars. Her website – Women Auto Know – is filled with great information designed to allow women to remain in the driver’s seat when it comes to car matters.
Audra was fabulous on The Lookout. She helped the team lay it all out in very easily understood language. I was impressed with not only her knowledge, but also her ability to speak effectively to the mechanically inept – folks like me. I bet those mechanics that tried to cheat Audra and The Lookout team will think twice before they try and cheat a woman again.
Ladies, learn the lay of the land. Check out Audra’s site and follow her advice. Don’t allow dishonest mechanic shops to take advantage of your lack of knowledge. And fellas, note that you are not immune to this type of rip-off either. Luckily, you do not have to be female to visit and learn from Audra’s website…you “auto know” as well!
