Today I am sharing with you a correspondence that was forwarded to me by my lovely friend Katherine Tweed who aside from being a fabulous person has community service hardwired into her soul. The correspondence comes from Erin Prochnow the Executive Director of YWCA Cass Clay and is a plea for help. I hope that by posting it here on my blog that all the good folks that read my blog will have an opportunity to provide whatever help they can.
I have had the opportunity to work with Erin and her team on a couple of projects and I recognize the power of the work they do. Their work, particularly the work they do at the shelter, is life changing for women and children. It deserves our community’s unwavering support.
Please help if you can. Perhaps you can incorporate this into one of your last minute school supply runs. What a great example that would be for your children. The bottom line is – your small effort to help really will mean the world to someone. And folks, that is how we roll in the Fargo-Moorhead community. 😉
As a committee member and integral part of the YWCA, I want to update you on the current state of things at the Emergency Shelter. As you know, we’ve been operating at or over our capacity 72% of the past 18 months. As a result, we are running very low on supplies for women and children seeking safe refuge. Currently, 24 women and 37 children are calling the Emergency Shelter home; 75% of whom sought shelter because of domestic violence.
Earlier this week, I needed to go out and buy diapers, wipes and diaper cream because we were nearly out. This is a rare purchase for us as our generous community has abundantly donated these items in the past. As I was on my way back, it struck me just how fortunate I am to be able to go to the store and buy the items my one-year old daughter needs. It’s a trip many of us make to meet the most basic needs of our own families.
Today I ask for your help. As you go about your busy and hectic lives, please think of the women and children in our care and pick up a few extra supplies while you’re at the store and drop them by the shelter. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated! Our current immediate needs are very basic, they include:
Most Urgent Needs
- Diapers size 4, 5 and 6 (No 3’s are needed)
- Pullup’s boy or girl size 3t-6t
- Shampoo and Conditioner
- Body wash
- New children PJ’s sizes 7 and up
- New boys clothes sizes 6 and up
- Dish Soap
- Cleaning supplies
- Lysol wipes
- Kitchen table and chair sets
- Twin/full size blankets/quilts
Again, I wanted you to be aware of the current situation. Thank you for your continued support of the mission, purpose and work of the YWCA. We couldn’t offer these essential services without your help.
