What exactly would a temporary pilot do?

I am easily amused.  I am fairly grateful for that most days.  Today I received a vacancy announcement email from the North Dakota State job list serv that amused me.  The announcement was for a “temporary pilot” position with the Department of Transportation located in Bismarck.

I knew immediately that this was a case of a poorly worded announcement.  Obviously, it was being listed as a temporary position and the person who put out the announcement inadvertently included the temporary part in the position title.  But even knowing that it was a simple mistake I still found myself smiling at the thought of a position titled “temporary pilot” – I was suddenly curious about what a temporary pilot might do.

Would a temporary pilot take over when the permanent pilot had to go to the bathroom?  Would a temporary pilot do something else other than being a pilot a few months into the job?  Would a temporary pilot only fly short flights?  What exactly would a temporary pilot do?

Luckily, the whole temporary pilot thing was just an exercise in entertainment for my easily amused mind.  It doesn’t take much to get me going some days.  But I have to say, if I am going on one of my flights of fancy who better to take me than a temporary pilot? ;-)

About Ms. C

I teach at NDSU...but I remain a student of life with all the enthusiasm that entails. My favorite saying is, "Sometimes you have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down." In the new forty that is what I am doing...building my wings.
