I visited Fargo Cass Public Health a couple of weeks ago at their relatively new location (since August last year) on 25th Street South. Locals may recall that Public Health spent many years downtown before the move to the former Sunmart location off 13th Avenue. I really like their new location, it is bright and cheery and very easy to access.
But what I like the best about their new location is what they’ve done with the place, particularly the outside. You see, Fargo Cass Public Health, put in a series of giant planters in front of their building as a community garden of sorts. They are growing all kinds of goodies and once a week they encourage folks to come out and enjoy the fruits (well, actually the vegetables) of their labor. And by that I mean, they give the items away – fresh, home-grown vegetables – for free from your local public health office. Now folks, that is what I call walking the talk!
Lori at the Public Health office told me they had a few planters at their old building as well, but nothing like they have now. There is a small committee assigned to the project and they make sure that the gardening and distribution effort is humming along. Well, Fargo Cass Public Health, let me be the first to say BRAVO! I am impressed with the quiet ease with which you have implemented this effort and what it says about your commitment to your mission and the community. Keep doing what you are doing – you are doing it exactly right!
